The painting, which forms part of the artist’s second phase, known as ‘Antropofagica’ (1928–1930), features – like other works from the same period – bold colours and themes relating to the imagination, dreams, childhood memories, and visions of real objects transformed into imaginary creatures, among many other distorted forms and altered perspectives. It brings together two other works (‘A Negra’ and ‘Abaporu’). The characters are interconnected and appear to be conversing. One can also observe variations in light and dark green vegetation contrasting with a sky of pinkish hues. Tarsila do Amaral was a radiant and enlightened woman, ahead of her time, a visionary and a trailblazer. An artist of fundamental importance to the history of Brazilian painting and the visual arts. The Modernist and Anthropophagic movements are important cultural icons in the artist’s career and in the country’s history. In a joint project with Tarsila do Amaral, the artist’s grandniece, curated by Francesca Alzati, by Kamy has selected iconic pieces that have been transformed into tapestries. These exquisite tapestries faithfully represent Tarsila’s works, which draw inspiration from the colours and landscapes of Brazil. Hand-woven following meticulous research and created exclusively for by Kamy, each piece respects the delicacy of the original design in its textile interpretation. This fresh interpretation not only offers an accessible design that celebrates and promotes the reach of Brazilian art across the globe, but also ensures the legacy of this great artist lives on. ©TarsilDesign: Tarsila do Amaral
